Curriculum/Schedule
The orthopaedic residency program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is designed so that the resident acquires both clinical and surgical skills in a graduated fashion.
In the PGY- 2 and 3 years, the resident is instructed in the fundamentals of information gathering. This includes the acquisition of skills in the area of history taking, regional physical examination and interpretation of musculoskeletal diagnostic tests. Residents are instructed in the fundamentals of formulation of a differential diagnosis and are encouraged to acquire a comprehensive approach to treatment of musculoskeletal maladies. Operative skills are acquired through one-on-one teaching.
Early on, it is expected that the resident will acquire skills in both non-operative and post-operative care. Formulation of a rehabilitation plan once the patient is discharged from the hospital is also acquired during these years.
The PGY- 4 and 5 years are characterized by increased responsibility both in the outpatient setting and operating room. In the outpatient setting, the resident is expected to hone his/her skills in information gathering, formulation of a differential diagnosis and establishment of a treatment plan with acceptable alternatives. In the operating rooms, the residents must demonstrate the ability to perform standard orthopaedic procedures with minimal supervision.
The UC residency program has ample case material in which to develop patient care skills and graduated responsibility.
